What is spaced repetition and how can it help with language learning?
You're probably heard the term 'spaced repetition' but how exactly can we use it to our
What is spaced repetition?
It’s a scientifically proven method that involves reviewing information at closer intervals, boosting your memory, and making it less likely you'll forget everything.
Studies show it can significantly improve learning and reduce the time spent studying.
How can it help for language learning?
In language learning, the process of spaced repetition can be really effective. Rather than repeatedly saying / studying a word 100 times in the same day, you can learn more effectively if you repeat it over a longer period of time, but in intervals that gradually increase. For example once per day initially, then over time you review it once a week etc.
What are useful tools and apps I can use for spaced repetition to help with language learning?
The first suggestion I’m going to give is Memrise. This is a language app that has section on it called “Review”. This shows you words and phrases that you haven’t seen for a while and it times how long it’s been since you have studied each word or phrase.
Then, Anki is a really useful app. With this, you can input your own words or phrases and have more control over the settings (timings of the spacing etc).
Ultimately, use the app that you feel most comfortable with!
